Alongside its Q3 results, Merck KGaA presented its new sustainability strategy, which it said integrates sustainability “more strongly as an essential component of its corporate strategy”. The bonus pay of board members will be linked to progress in the three specific goals, which are:
1. “In 2030, Merck will achieve human progress for more than one billion people through sustainable science and technology”, with focus areas of sustainable innovations and technologies for customers, and the impact of its technologies and products on health and well-being
2. “By 2030, the company will integrate sustainability into all its value chains”, with focus areas of sustainability culture and values, sustainable and transparent supply chain and securing the company’s social licence to operate in all regions
3. “By 2040, Merck will achieve climate neutrality and reduce its resource consumption”, with focus areas of climate change and emissions and water and resource intensity
The company added that it will report annually on the implementation status of the strategy. It is currently defining the corresponding performance indicators and testing the internally developed method for impact valuation, known as ‘Sustainable Business Value’, the concept of which it published in the journal Sustainability in October.
