Cefic sounds alarm to new EC

Cefic has sent what it calls a “clear and urgent message” to the new European Commission, that the European chemical industry “is at a breaking point, and decisive action is needed now”. Failing bold measures to stop it, “the industry that has long been a cornerstone of Europe’s prosperity is at risk of further decline, jeopardising its future on the continent”.
The key problems Cefic highlighted are energy prices up to four times higher than in other regions and a “too complex, slow and often contradictory”. These, the association claimed, “make it exceedingly difficult not only to operate but also to transform in alignment with the Green Deal objectives”. Jobs and investment are already being lost to other regions.
“We call on you, our new European leaders, to take stock of the calls of Antwerp to help restore the business case for investments in Europe,” said Cefic director general Marco Mensink. “There should be no more plant closures and job losses … We must work together quickly and efficiently to make Europe the best place to do business.”
