The Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) has called for project proposals to advance competitive circular bio-based industries in Europe. The deadline is 18 September and the budget is €172 million. Funding will be given to 13 topics in three broad categories:
- Innovation Actions to scale up activities from prototype to product validation and market replication, including Flagships to deploy the first-in-kind industrial and commercial-scale production plant in Europe
- Research & Innovation Actions to establish new knowledge or explore the feasibility of new or improved technologies, products, processes and services
- Coordination & Support Actions to structure stakeholder communities, support technological visions and outreach, and disseminate and exploit research results, among other objectives
Among the most relevant topics are:
- Urban-industrial symbiosis for bio-waste valorisation
- Bio-based drop-ins/smart drop-in platform chemicals, via cost-effective, sustainable & resource-efficient conversion of biomass
- Retrofitting of (bio)refineries industrial plants towards higher-value bio-based products
- Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) bio-based solutions to replace hazardous conventional chemicals for textiles production
- Cost-effective & robust continuous biotech bio-based processes
- SSbD bio-based polymers/copolymers unlocking new market applications
- Valorisation of untapped forest biomass
