JM buys from 3M
Johnson Matthey has acquired the full IP rights to a portfolio of silicon alloy-based anode materials for battery cells from 3M. Most anode technology is based on carbon materials, such as graphite, but JM said that it sees strong potential for silicon-based materials in the next generation of products.
The company, which has already developed the eLNO portfolio of ultra-high energy density cathode materials, said that this will enable it to “accelerate its understanding of the market and technology for battery anode materials”. As such, the buy will also inform its R&D investments over the next decade.
