Merck to grow speciality gases

Merck KGaA has reached an agreement with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to support a €300 million investment to expand its semiconductor manufacturing site in Hometown (pictured) by further develop the world's largest integrated speciality gases facility. About 68 new jobs will be created.

This is part of the Electronics business sector’s Level Up growth programme, which envisages spending over €3 billion in innovation and capacity expansion projects in the US, Germany and Asia by the end of 2025. Other investments to date and ongoing include:

Sitagliptin supply deal signed

Following on from the extension of a long-standing supply agreement with Merck & Co. for a proprietary enzyme used in the manufacture of sitagliptin, Codexis has reached a manufacturing agreement with two other firms. Sitagliptin is the API in Merck’s Januvia and one of the APIs in Janumet.

EC fines Sigma-Aldrich for non-disclosure

The European Commission (EC) has fined Sigma-Aldrich €7.5 million for three infringements in providing incorrect or misleading information in its replies to two requests for information made pursuant to Article 11(2) of the EU Merger Regulation during the official investigation into its acquisition by Merck KGaA in 2015.

Merck announces ADC/HPAPI expansion

Merck KGaA is to spend €59 million to expand HPAPI and ADC manufacturing capabilities and capacity at its facility near Madison, Wisconsin. Completion is expected by mid-2022 and should add approximately 50 full-time jobs from 2021.

The investment will allow large-scale manufacturing of highly potent oncology compounds, the company said. The 6,500 m2 building will be one of the largest dedicated HPAPI facilities specifically designed to handle single-digit nanogram OEL materials.

Azelis to distribute for Merck in Vietnam

Azelis has concluded a new agreement with Merck KGaA, covering the distribution of Merck Performance Materials’ complete range in Vietnam for personal care, CASE, food and health, and industrial chemicals. The division’s products include pigments, active ingredients and raw materials. The two companies have been partners since 1968 and have existing distribution relationships in Europe and other regions.

Pigments exit for Merck?

According to a story given by company insiders to the news agency Bloomberg, Merck KGaA is considering the sale of its Effect Pigments business.

The management and joint works council of Merck KGaA have made a comprehensive agreement about the main site in Darmstadt, Germany, with the stated aim of securing its future viability as a central science and technology hub and further expanding it.
