Evonik plans ultra-pure colloidal silica plant
Evonik has revealed that it is building a $7.9 million plant to produce ultra-high purity colloidal silica at its site in Weston, Michigan. Due onstream in 2024, this will be the first of its kind in North America. The investment was supported by a $900,000 performance-based grant under the Michigan Business Development Programme.
Colloidal silica, which Evonik makes under the Idsil brand, is used in the electronics and semiconductor industries. The company said that its new plant will make it one of the few players in the market able to reliably produce the colloidal silica required for chemical mechanical planarisation. It is already a major supplier of ultra-pure tetrachlorosilane and other silanes for the industry.
