Orion opens battery centre

Orion has opened its new Battery Innovation Centre at it main innovation hub in Cologne. The facility includes a full array of production, testing and diagnostic equipment. The focus of its work will be to “accelerate Orion’s tailor-made product and process development in close cooperation with customers”, the company said.

Ami in new deal with Fermion

Ami Organics, an Indian maker of pharmaceutical intermediates, API and speciality chemicals, has signed a multi-year, multi-tonne agreement with Orion subsidiary Fermion. Under this, it will supply another intermediate in addition to the one agreed in November 2022.

Financial details were not disclosed but Ami said that, based on supply projections by Fermion, “the total minimum contract value is expected to be multi-million dollar” across multiple years. The product is expected to start contributing "meaningfully" to revenue from the 2025 financial year.

Carbon black goes green

Orion is to spend €12.8 million to further develop and demonstrate a climate-neutral process for producing carbon black from renewable sources. Half of the total is being funded by the decarbonisation programme of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, supported by the EU’s NextGenerationEU fund.

Orion building second China plant

Orion Engineered Carbons has begun construction of its second plant in China for speciality and high-performance carbon black at Huaibei in Anhui province. This complements an existing plant in Qingdao, which opened in 1994, and another in South Korea.

The new plant is expected to be completed late next year and to begin operating in 2023. It will have 65,000-70,000 tonnes/year of capacity. Orion will equip the plant to convert its waste heat to steam for sale to the local industrial park.
