Global Healthcare Opportunities, a European specialist investor in global healthcare, and The Vistria Group, a middle-market private investment firm, have agreed to acquire US-based CDMO Alcami from Madison Dearborn Partners and Ampersand Capital Partners. They will each have 50% stakes.
Pharmaceutical CDMO Sterling Pharma Solutions has announced a new strategic partnership with ADC Biotechnology, a specialist in antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). Both companies are UK-based.
Sterling will make an unspecified but significant investment in ADC Bio with a view to acquiring it in Q1 2021, subject to due diligence. The businesses will then work together to develop an integrated service offering for existing and potential customers, which combines ADC Bio’s expertise with Sterling’s in high potency small molecules.
Pharmaceutical CDMO Sterling Pharma Solutions which is based near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, and was formerly owned by Rhodia and Shasun, has acquired Alcami’s facility at Germantown, Wisconsin (pictured). Terms were not disclosed.
Sterling said that this will boost its API development and manufacturing capacity, particularly for complex and hazardous requirements, and including high potency. Germantown has cGMP development, scale-up and manufacturing facilities with specialist expertise in handling technologies including plant-scale hydrogenation and cryogenic reactions.
The ongoing race to develop the first effective vaccines for the treatment of COVID-19 continues to generate manufacturing and development agreements between pharmaceutical giants, biotechs and CDMOs.
Most recently, Sterling Pharma Solutions agreed to carry out final purification of drug product for Moleculin Biotech’s WP1122 drug candidate from its site in Cary, North Carolina. Moleculin is about to submit an IND for this to the FDA and wanted a reliable source of supply in the US.
Two of the major global pharmaceutical CDMOs, Lonza and Alcami, have announced the appointments of new CEOs in early June. There have also been changes in senior positions at Corden Pharma and, imminently, at Cambrex.
Several of the world’s major pharmaceutical CDMOS have recently made announcements relating to their participation in projects to develop treatment for the Covid-19 virus. Many involve chloroquines, in anticipation of their large-scale use.
